I am going to be getting my baby TAG soon and I wanted to know if some of the household cleaners I use are safe to use. I am a clean freak and I like to keep my house clean.
WINDEX for mirrors & windows LEMON PLEDGE for wood furniture SOFT SCRUB for the bathroom PINE SOL or FABULOSO (spanish product) for floors I also use GLADE PLUG INS are they safe to use? How about CANDLES? How are they harmful if sprayed near them or is is just the smell in general? |

![]() You want to limit your use off all toxic cleaning materials and your TAG's exposure to them. Be careful with bleach in particular. If you really have to use these products, make sure the room is well ventilated. Open windows and doors to create cross currents. Turn on window, floor or ceiling fans if you have them. Top thing you can do is to buy unscented cleaning products. The chemicals used to create the scent can be harmful and they do not make things cleaner, they just provide a nice smell for human noses. If you want a nice smell, buy natural flowers, fresh lemon, spices etc. Good luck. |

I only use Simple Green, Dr. Bronner's, Meyer's, and Seventh Generation products. They smell beautiful and are completely nontoxic. Also, if you buy them in concentrated form, they are cheap. Hydrogen peroxide is good for killing germs. Artificial scents and most commercially available candles are full of petro-derivatives and other potential carcinogens. Whole Foods has nice candles and air fresheners that shouldn't bother your bird.
If I can't eat it, I don't use it! |

You will likely discover the age old secret of baking soda, vinegar and hydrogen peroxide. 10% bleach solution for things that really need sanitizing. Dump the candles (the only bird safe ones are beeswax or palm wax with natural cotton wicks and unscented and then you can still have a bird fly into one), plug ins, air freshener sprays, teflon, and everything you listed as cleaning supplies. Sorry. :X
If you can smell it your bird which has a lot more air sac lung space is probably sucking it in in way higher doses. Better to be safe than sorry.

I dont use air fresheners- candles- or harsh cleaners.
I do use vinegar, soft scrub and an orange cleaner. If i want the house to smell pretty, i will simmer cinnamon and apples on the stove. it worked wonders when I was selling my last home. We used to use pinesol alot way back when..but then the Dr's said it would be best to go with something not as strong. That was when we were first learning. for sanatizing the birds things, I use Vanodine. |
