Default Sammy

Sammy came out of his cage tonight. On his own & wasnt spooked. Seems to be enjoying himself. He is sitting on the bottom of his cage right now. He peeks out at me every once in a while then runs back under it. If I want to gain his trust, how do I get him back in for bedtime or is it freedom for Sammy tonight. Sammy has been taking formula/oatmeal/applesauce snacks when Dexter takes formula, but wont take any right now. He seems content looking around. Its been soo long working with him. Im hoping for the best result. He did decide to come out on his own. I open his door every night when Dexter is getting cuddled, but Sammy never comes out. Its hard to be in a cage oll the time. I know the bird feels safe in it, but freedom is good. Im glad he feels he can be safe outside his cage. What ever I do I have to do it with a bare hand. He reacts badly to towels, gloves, nets, ladders, perches, basicaly any trap device. Bad first owners. Any ideas?

Rammie was a pain putting to bed in the evening. He would go to the point of biting us (never drew blood though) which is out of character for him. We started offering apeanut or a cashew (depends on their mood) and now we have no problem putting him in his cage. Max even gets agitated if we're late putting them to bed.

I also feed then late in the morning, at about 11 o'clock, half an hour before I leave for work. They are easy to put in their cage as well because they associate it with their food.

Basically, I'm repeating what Lisa is saying

Sammy is not going back to his cage. He sits on top of the cage or on top of Dexters cage (which I bring in during the day). I wake up to find Sammy sitting on his cage door watching me. Most likely laughing at me. It is not food motivated, & too scared of anyone to step up. I wish it hadnt had such a rocky start in life. I have been offering a warm bath water in his cage as well. I had been doing so well, but I have to expect small bumps in the road to trust. I shouldnt have gotten so optimimistic. I need to remember to take it slow. Maybe tomorrow I will have better luck.

Can you use a stick/perch to get him to step up and place him back in his cage?

I think I would avoid leaving him out all night for a few reasons, the first being safety, the second that it sets a bad precedent.

I would set up a routing, even if it's not ideal at first, if it's done calmly with love he'll begin to tolerate it....

foods always a good reinforcer. I would use something ONLY for that, something he finds special and irresistible....

It may take a bit before he trusts enough to take food as a positive reinforcer, alot of nervous birds can't be lured with food.

I hope any of this helps.....

I've had Mo for about 3 months now and I'm at the point where I can drop a few cherious in his dish and he puts himself away.....LOL..... He didn't start that way he was WAY suspicious and could have cared less if I was offering him a steak dinner or icecream!~

Maybe put a night light behind his cage and turning off the lights, so he'll go in? My g2 is afraid of the dark and this would work for her! and of course put a nice food bit in before you turn off the lights... Just a thought

Sammy is back in his cage. Food won out. He finally got hungry enough to go back to his cage. Its a good thing to, because a bare hand would have required some strong willingness to get bit.

Default OK, good, BUILD

ON that!!!!

I would use that to your advantage....

for example.... let sammy out first thing in the morning, BEFORE you feed. when you want him back in , put his food in, but only enough for ONE meal. shortly after he eats, let him back out and repeat.

Of course on days you have to spend like that, I don't recommend leaving him or any bird for that matter unattended.

Good luck, let us know how your journey goes!

I dont work. I stay at home. Sammy is never left too long. Unfortunately the previous owners used everything under the sun to capture this young grey. But I am making progress, alittle at a time. Sammy never uttered a word before I took him. He would never ever eat from a human hand. Never had the opertunity to play with another bird, or to make fun of a dog (which he did when they were alive). But now that Sammy relizes how much he was missing out on, I think I might be able to win over this bird.
