Default A highly regarded rescue group in Northern California

Mickaboo.org is a great website/ organization for those in Northern California looking to adopt (or foster!) all kinds of birds.

Currently they have three African greys (I think one CAG, two TAG).

Adoption fees run from about $300-400 for greys (I think).

I have heard some good stuff about them.
Here in Arizona we have a place called Tara. I was really impressed with them. They had more cockatoo's then anything. They say that cockatoo's are the number one bird that people turn over to them. It is really sad to see all the birds that don't have homes.

I hear ya, Vicki! It IS sad that so many birds need homes.

A lady told me of a cockatoo that ended up with a rescue organization because it would act out (as birds do). They would punish the bird by putting it in a closet. The 'Too was originally purchased for a NINE YEAR OLD girl.

OH- another great link- MYTOOS.com

Do you know if Tara has a website, Vicki?

Sometimes it's better to adopt from a rescue and pay the charge for a healthy parrot that probably has been Vet checked and already on a good diet. If the parrot is adopted from a private party where it sometimes costs more to do a complete workup without any complications.

This is very true Joe! If it is a good rescue they will get the birds vet checked and on a good diet and make sure everything is good before you can adopt the bird. Plus they will make sure that you and the bird are a good fit. I know at Tara you have to go to a Parrot class before you can adopt a bird. I think they have a home visit too. Tara does have a web site and it is: http://www.tarafoundation.com/

Mytoo's is a message board and you have to be careful there. Some of the people are not very nice.
I guess you can learn a lot about a too there..

There are a total of 4 too's in my local paper right now. one is only 6 months old and one set is a bonded pair to be sold together only. It breaks my heart..

Life is good when you are the chosen one. Except of course when you get barfed on.

I am not a vet, no member of a message board can substitute for a visit to a good avian vet in the case of potential health problems.

My Cockatoo had 3 homes before he was 18 months old and was plucked and was mutilating himself when I took him in. I really wish people would stop breeding and buying them.

it makes me so sad to hear about all sorts of animals that are breed and then nobody wants them after the cuteness wears off. I wish that people would really stop and think before getting a pet.
